The Mechanic Charged Me $700 For Windshield Wiper Fluid. He Didn't Know My Dad Is A Retired Mechanic
The Unexpected Visit
The guy at the auto shop handed me a bill and said, "That’ll be $700." I blinked, expecting a mistake, but he pointed at the windshield wiper fluid line item without flinching.
I knew almost nothing about cars, so I didn’t argue. Still, something felt wrong. As soon as I left, I called my dad—a retired mechanic—just to be sure I hadn’t been completely taken advantage of.
He didn’t ask many questions. He just said, “Which shop?” and then hung up. What happened when he showed up at the garage made every employee freeze mid-step.
Waiting For Dad's Call
Sitting on the couch, I couldn't calm my nerves. My eyes kept darting to my phone, checking every minute for any updates.
I knew once Dad contacted the shop, things would start rolling. It’s always been amazing how he could take charge of any situation with so little fuss.
I wondered if I was exaggerated in my own head. But, knowing Dad, he'd get to the bottom of it quickly.
Dad's Determination
The front door swung open, and there was Dad, Steve, with his usual firm expression but a noticeable glint of purpose in his eyes. "Get your coat.
We're going to sort this out," he said simply, leaving no room for discussion. I quickly grabbed my jacket, knowing this issue had become personal for him.
Dad was on a mission, and his determination was contagious.
Into Action
Dad grabbed his old, tan mechanic's jacket from the hook, the one he wore for years at his own shop, and gestured for me to follow him.
It was as if he was putting on an armor. As he zipped it up, I realized how nostalgic it must've felt for him, stepping back into the role he loved.
Silent, but full of intentions, I followed him out the door, heading for our car.
The Drive to Resolution
The drive to the shop was silent except for the rhythm of the blinker as Dad navigated through traffic. My heart pounded the entire time.
I glanced at him, confident and steady behind the wheel. He had a special way of making you feel like everything would be alright.
I couldn't help but replay the absurd bill in my mind, wondering if it was an honest mistake or something else altogether.
